In the Media & Part of the Community
A Look Back at 2008
Early in 2008 Martin Denton, NYTE Executive Director, was awarded the
OTTY award which is presented by the East Side newspaper, Our Town,
to salute New Yorkers whose accomplishments deserve to be highlighted with
their OTTY (Our Town Thanks You) awards. In
the fall NYTE received the
Stewardship Award given for significant
contribution to the Off-Off-Broadway community through service, support and
leadership (presented by the New York Innovative Theatre Foundation).
nytheatre.com's student/senior discounts page was mentioned in an article in
the New York Times and indietheater.org was noted in the Travel Section of
the same paper. An article written by Martin, "Confessions of a Critic" was
published in the Dramatist Magazine as the year ended.
Community Outreach
Martin Denton, again hosted the Opening Ceremonies of FringeNYC and
appeared on WBAI radio with Janet Coleman discussing the festival. NYTE
convened the 2nd Indie Theater Convocation
at Barrow Street Theater with more than 180 attendees. Highlights of the
Convocation was the Introduction of the new League of Independent Theatre
led by John Clancy. The league was a direct outgrowth of the 1st Indie
Theater Convocation NYTE convened. To inform readership about the often
unsung deeds and news that effects the community and the city but is not
generally publicized, Martin's blog, the nytheatre i was redesigned as the
Good News Initiative and a new story is posted each day. Martin again was a
guest at classes at NYU, conducted after show talk backs, and met one-on-one
with leaders of the theatrical community. Martin is also on the Board of
Directors of the League of Independent Theater.
